STV Leads with 3D

Following on from the success of the billion dollar box office hit Avatar, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that nineteen 3D movies are planned for release in the US in 2010. The popularity of 3D is not just confined to the theatre with the rollout of 3D TV sets across a number of countries, including Australia, indicating that manufacturers and consumers are keen to try new and innovative products and services.

The need for an urgent review of the current communications regulatory regime in Australia has been brought into sharp focus over the past few weeks. Reports of the proposed launch of new services such as the Telstra T-Box, Fetch TV and TriplePlay indicate that business is moving ahead with plans that seek to capitalise on the rollout of the NBN.
In a recent speech the Minister himself highlighted the lack of Australian content requirements related to programming via the internet as one element of uncertainty surrounding existing and planned services in a converged environment.
FOXTEL CEO, Kim Williams (pictured left), recently called on the Government to recognise the urgency surrounding the proposed review of the Broadcasting Services Act in 2011. He said that 2011 was ‘too late’ because ‘change is affecting us now’. Williams suggested that the Productivity Commission should conduct the review as soon as possible.
