Digital revolution: 2004-05

In March 2004 digital television arrived in Australia, providing viewers for the first time with DVD quality pictures and CD quality sound.  Foxtel’s new digital platform launched with 130 channels, including 66 in the basic subscriber tier.  At the same time Fox Sports 1 and 2 upgraded to 16:9 screen format, interactive services including voting were introduced and, a year later, Foxtel’s first IQ personal video recorder was launched.

Fox8 premiered Logie Award-winning drama series Love My Way, following the lives of young Australians and their relationships, followed by Australia’s Next Top Model.  Subscription television sports content expanded with exclusive coverage of the Hyundai A-League soccer and pay-per-view events including the Anthony Mundine v Danny Green grudge match, which attracted the biggest broadcast audience to date with more than 135,000 viewers.

ASTRA also expanded, with an updated set of events and a new chair in former NSW Premier, Nick Greiner.
